V-Star 650 Tour Classic

Anyone can turn there Classic into a head turner like this 650 V Star Classic with a fairing by THE TRIKE SHOP! John McManus is the owner of this stunning touring classic. While attending Laconia Bike Week in Laconia New Hampshire in June 1998, John learned of the trike shop fairing and new the direction that he had planned for his Star.

The fairing can be ordered from the Drag Specialties FAT BOOK an aftermarket parts book for Harleys. The first step we took to mounting the fairing was to hold it in place and see how it would fit; taking measurements to where it could be mounted. What we came up with was to use the stock Yamaha windshield-mount kit that had been removed from the bike. The main sidepieces of the mounts were inverted upside-down so they would line up with the two mounting bolts on the fairing. Tabs had to be cut from aluminum angle and added to the Yamaha mount to adapt to the bolt angle of the fairing.

Although the fairing comes with only two mounting posts, we felt that four mounting locations would be better. So we added two more aluminum angle brackets to the small 3/8" diameter tubing on the Yamaha lower mounting bracket and using acorn nuts and plastic washers from the Yamaha shield now on the garage floor! We then drilled through and bolted the fiberglass fairing at the bottom front portion.

Now the fairing was removed and sent out to Ecstasy Cycle Design in Gilmanton, NH to be painted. Because the fairing was to be painted two colors to match the bike, the front fender was removed so that the paint and pinstripes could be color matched. On the inside of the fairing is a compartment housing for a stereo system and speakers. We added a Pioneer CD player with 10 times over sampling for shock resistance on bumpy roads. It is best not to skimp on the cost so as to get the best sound out of a small system! Yamaha passing lamp were later added and managed to fit with no trouble at all!

Liberty hard bags by Champion Sidecars were added to complete the look. The only trouble with the Champion bags was that they do not work with the Yamaha solo seat V rail, so the rail had to be removed to allow the compartment to open fully. Other additions were lamp visors, fender-trim, front fender rail, rear fender rack, Corbin solo studded seat, studded tank chap, chrome plate trim, Jardine forward controls and floorboards, Cobra slash cut pipes, a handlebar pouch, chrome fender stays, and front tool bag.
